Killers is a 2010 action comedy film starring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher. The film was released in the United States on June 4, 2010.

Plot

After a break-up with a spontaneous boyfriend, an overly cautious Jen Kornfeldt (Katherine Heigl) travels to Nice, France with her parents (Tom Selleck and Catherine O'Hara). A chance meeting in an elevator Spencer Aimes (Ashton Kutcher), a undercover CIA operative, quickly becomes a runaway romance.

After a night of drinking, Jen reveals that she's not the spontaneous person she's been pretending to be and in return Spencer bluntly tells her that he's a contract killer, albeit unhappy about being one. Unfortunately she's already passed out and hasn't heard. In spite of this, Spencer decides that Jen's the woman he's been looking for and decides to marry her. When Spencer tells his boss Henry (Rob Riggle) his plan the response is the obvious: you don't just quit being a contract killer. Spencer is defiant and goes ahead with his plan.

Despite asking Jen's father for permission to marry her (and a mutual affinity for firearms), Spencer senses that Mr. Kornfeldt doesn't really like him.

Fast forward to three years later, they're settled into their new normal life. After surprising Jen with a remodeled office, she gives him a birthday surprise: tickets to Nice to celebrate his birthday and their three years. Because of the hitman connections to Nice, Spencer is less than enthusiastic. When her friends ask about his reaction, they take it as signs of that he might be getting bored and fill her head with doubts.

Meanwhile Spencer gets a postcard from his old boss and the ultimatum to take another job. While trying to refuse him long distance, Jen's father shows up to take Spencer to dinner, so Spencer hangs up the phone, prompting a suspicion in Mr. Kornfeldt. This is fueled further when Jen's dad see the postcard and quizzes him about the XOXO (hugs and kisses) being odd coming from a former boss.

Stopping home to change, Spencer finds that the dinner invite is just a detour to bring him to a surprise party. While Spencer navigates a ton of drunk friends, Jen's friends continue to fill her head with doubts over Spencer's lack of enthusiasm for the Nice trip. This is further irritated, when the following morning, despite her attempts to be physical with him, Spencer rushes Jen off on her business trip.

A little while later, Jen comes back (without having gone on her trip) to find Spencer being tossed around their house by one of their out of shape, hung-over neighbors. Spencer screams for her to get his gun (which she didn't know he had) and she ends up shooting the attacker in the arm. While interrogating the attacker, he reveals that there is a 20 million dollar bounty on his head. An unidentified sniper takes pot shots at them, and Spencer and Jen flee.

After escaping, they check out the hotel room where Spencer has tracked his old boss to, but find that someone has already killed him. Jen starts demanding that they go to her dad for help, but Spence rejects this and in the middle of their argument Jen throws up but not from the comments, but because she thinks she might be pregnant.

Heading back to his office to take a pregnancy test, Spencer is now attacked by his secretary. Turns out there's a lot of people that know about the contract and they're all coming after him. And surprisingly for an ex-hitman he gets his butt kicked fairly easily by his average pursuers. Jen comes to his rescue and after killing the secretary reveals that she is pregnant and is leaving him.

Left alone, Spence is next attacked by the UPS driver, who is killed, not by Spencer but by a neighbor vying for the contract. The woman, Olivia, then comes after Spencer, only to be killed by the return of Jen, whose decided she'll stay after all. But petty arguments and more assassins follow until they finally go back to their neighborhood, where there's a huge block-party going on. Stopping by their house for guns and passports, they're surrounded by neighbors and co-workers (who turn out to have been plants set in place three years before).

Finally, one assassin holds Jen's mother as a hostage in a Mexican stand off with Jen, only to be killed by the arrival of Jen's father. The twist now comes with Spencer's realization that it is actually Jen's father who has put out the contract on him because, having seen the post card from Henry Jen's father thought Spencer was coming after him... Turns out he was a contract killer as well, and that he was actually the target Spencer was after in Nice three years earlier. The two are now in a mexican stand off.

Wanting to prove that he really did get out of the business and had no desire to kill her father, Spencer drops his gun. Jen, now convinced, turns on her father and comment: "So you're not really a pilot? I've been dodging bullets all day because of you and that's not good for the baby." The realization that he's a grandfather (and Spencer is the grandchild's father) resolves the whole issue.

Production notes

Filming began in the fall of 2009 and took place in Atlanta, Georgia and France.[1]

Reception

Killers was not screened for critics before its initial release. Other Lionsgate films that haven't been screened for critics include the Saw films and Tyler Perry movies. [2] Killers received very poor reviews. Review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes reports that 12% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 42 reviews, with an average score of 3.1/10[3] The critical consensus is: Dull, formulaic, and chemistry-free, Killers is an action/comedy that's largely bereft of thrills or laughs.[3] At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film has received an average score of 18, based on 14 reviews,[4] the first wide film of 2010 to receive the Metacritic classification "Overwhelming dislike". It is currently the lowest rated film of 2010 on Metacritic, but on Rotten Tomatoes it is third to Furry Vengeance and The Bounty Hunter.

Not all reviews were that negative though. The Film Stage said "Kutcher has a few good scenes and Selleck and Riggle are entertaining in their limited screen time. Despite the rampant amount of ridiculousness that ensues as the film progresses, if you leave your brain at the door you just may be mildly entertained. While it’s certainly not a movie to write home about, the film manages to offer enough mindless laughs and fun to somewhat entertain even the most cynical of us. -wiki 8/10
